Study on the Premenstrual Tension Syndrome in Students


Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and severity of the subjective symptoms perceived by students at the premenstrual period. This study using the Moos Menstrual Disease Questionnaire (MDQ) was conducted from June 23 to July 5, 1986. The subjects of the research were 367 high school girls and 165 college students in Kwangju City.
The result were summarized as follows:
1. Frequency of the subjective symptoms perceived by the respondents at the premenstrual and during the menstrual period was 35.6% and 56.6% respectively.
2. The higher scores in the severity of perceived subjective symptoms were revealed in . college students, the group with negative attitudes to menstrual, the group of analgesic users and the neurotic personal types.
3. As a result of the questionnaire it has been shown that the students had char-acteristic symptoms before and during the menstrual period i.e. behavioral changes, negative feelings, pain and arousal.
More than half of the respondents answered that their premenstrual symptoms were sensitivity, fatigue, cramps, backache, depression, staying out late and just felt like staying in bed¢¥. During the menstrual period as well as the above mentioned symptoms they also had tension, anxiety, poor concentration in study, ineffectiveness, loneliness, headache, change in mood, excitement, and generalized aches and pain.
4. There was a slightly low correlation ship between the severity of subjective sym-ptoms and the neurotic personality.
